HONEYSUCKLE APHID

Early symptoms of Honeysuckle Aphid damage appear on new seasonal growth. Folded leaves soon turn brown and small branches die off. These dead areas have the appearance of "witches brooms" at the upper tips of honeysuckle shrubs. Adult aphids lay eggs in these dead areas and on plant stems where the eggs overwinter until warmer weather arrives in spring.

Pruning off and detroying or disposing of the dead twig clusters in fall or early spring is a very effective means of controling insect population growth in spring. The first generation of eggs usually hatch in early April, so pruning will only be effective when it is completed earler.

As with all pests, severe infestations may need the use of chemical cotrol. In this case, a systemic insecticide such as Orthene or Cygon would be the product of choice. Chemical applications should be made in accordance with all manufacturer's recommendations on the label. Never spray on windy days to avoid chemical drift, and refrain from such applications on very sunny, hot days.
