Since the early 1950's, the Schwarz Family name has been well known in Addison
and the surrounding area. Otto Schwarz started out in the egg business. For
many years, the barn was the home of "Otto's Egg Basket" where he raised chickens
and sold eggs in the community.
In the 1960s, Otto began to grow trees as a hobby. It did
not take long for this hobby to grow into a successful business for his family.
In 1971, Otto's sons, John and Richard, joined their father in starting Schwarz
Nursery. Their goal was to grow trees and shrubs of the highest quality and
provide professional landscaping services to their community.
Schwarz Nursery was formally incorporated in 1974 with many
changes taking place over the years. What once began as a small tree nursery
has grown into a large, full-service garden center and landscape design & install
business. We now have over 50 acres of growing fields in DuPage & DeKalb Counties
in addition to our 7-acre retail sales yard in Addison. During our peak season,
we employ over 50 people.
Sadly, Otto, John and Richard are no longer with us. Ownership
is now with the third generation of the Schwarz Family with Mick Schwarz serving
as company President and co-owner Harry Heier serving as Senior Vice President.
While the business has grown and changed over the years,
the family goals have not. We are very proud of our nursery and garden center
as well as the standards to which we adhere. They are the same standards with
which Otto Schwarz began his business and that serve as the basis for our Mission
Statement still today.
